- ➤ Gov. Murphy signed a bipartisan law at Ramsey High School that will require school districts to restrict nonacademic cell phone use during class and on school buses, with the Education Department set to release guidelines soon and policies taking effect for the 2026–27 school year. WRNJ Radio
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Murphy signed legislation on Friday that requires every public college to host the Council on Compulsive Gambling at least once each semester to educate students about gambling risks (including counseling services and self-exclusion programs). The law passed unanimously and aims to curb the rise in online sports betting among students. WRNJ Radio
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ State health officials announced on Jan. 9 that a child under 5 from northern New Jersey died from influenza, marking the first pediatric death this season as doctors note a mutated variant has weakened this year’s vaccine. Daily Record
- ➤ Gov. Phil Murphy signed four health bills on Jan. 9 in Trenton to expand access by allowing pharmacists to dispense HIV prevention medications (PrEP and PEP) and by covering menopause treatments. The reforms aim to lower costs and improve services for state residents. WRNJ Radio
