- ➤ A Bergen County man, Alexander Serrano from East Rutherford, was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide after crashing his 2003 Chevy Express van into a tree in Roxbury Township at 5:30 a.m. on April 28—killing front passenger Esmeralda Melchar—in a crash that sent him to Morristown Medical Center and led to his release on non-monetary bail conditions under the New Jersey Criminal Justice Reform Act. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The 16th Pathways of History Tour will take place May 3 and 4 in Morris County, allowing residents to visit 30 historic sites along two designated trails—Red and Blue—and gain insights into the county’s rich heritage. Organized by the Morris County Historical Society in cooperation with local groups, the free event spans 22 municipalities and offers activities for families and history fans. WRNJ Radio
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Rockaway student Tatva Kabat launched STEMpowering, a nonprofit that offers free STEM programs for K–8 students across New Jersey after noticing differences in access to early science education. The nonprofit taught over 50 students from five states during a four-week virtual summer camp last year & plans a second camp and STEM kit expansion this summer. WRNJ Radio
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Conservation projects will protect nearly 1,000 acres in northwest NJ. The state will add 473 acres to Allamuchy Mountain State Park and a coalition led by The Nature Conservancy will secure nearly 455 acres for Bobcat Alley — a corridor to preserve wildlife and natural habitats. Daily Record

- ➤ New Jersey residents preparing for a Real ID must bring required documents to prove their address, Social Security number, and identity by meeting the 2+1+6 rule, as the MVC will require these for flights and federal facility access after May 7. Daily Record

- ➤ Delbarton lacrosse will defend its Morris County Tournament title as the No. 1 seed after being honored at a coaches' meeting on April 29 — the tournament begins with first round games by May 3 and ends with the final set for May 13 at FDU-Florham. Daily Record
