  • Retired firefighter Ralph Castellano earned his degree in business administration from Montclair State University today—nearly 50 years after he began night classes while working in construction. He advised older adults that it is never too late to return to school.  News 12 New Jersey

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • NJ Transit officials and engineers continue contract talks as they work to avoid a strike on May 16 that could force commuters to find another way to travel. NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri said engineers had asked for a pay raise to $225,000 while union leader Tom Haas explained their proposal would only bring pay to $170,000 by 2029—leaving both sides at an impasse.  News 12 New Jersey

HEALTH NEWS

  • New Jersey health care leaders and social workers warned that proposed federal Medicaid cuts could lead to fewer doctor visits+more patients using emergency rooms, as NJ FamilyCare, used by 1.8 million residents with a $24 billion budget, may see reduced funding that limits essential services. The concern comes after discussions on legislative proposals aimed at cutting federal spending.  Daily Record

  • Kayla Ewing won her second gold medal at the NW Jersey Athletic Conference East Championships on Wednesday after thunderstorms disrupted the schedule as she won both hurdles races and placed second in the 200 meters.
