Good morning, Morristown. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 24th of June.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Morris and Essex law enforcement have increased patrols at houses of worship — including synagogues, mosques and churches — and at key sites after reports of a bomb strike in Iran and threats of retaliation. Officials urged residents to stay alert and report any suspicious activity.  WRNJ Radio
  • The New Jersey Department of Agriculture — with help from the Education and Human Services departments — announced Monday that over 693,000 eligible children will soon get a one-time $120 Summer EBT benefit to buy food. The program, part of a nationwide USDA effort, will add over $90 million in federal support into the local economy this summer.  WRNJ Radio
  • A bill to adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism was debated at a tense public hearing in Trenton last Monday—lawmakers heard three hours of testimony from supporters alarmed by rising hate crimes and critics who feared limits on free speech, and no vote was taken on the measure.  Daily Record
  • Representative Tom Kean, Jr. introduced the Protecting Coasts and Cities from Severe Weather Act to improve flooding observation and forecasting in vulnerable areas. He said the bill aims to reduce loss of life and economic damage by giving local leaders better tools for weather warnings — a move that could protect our communities from severe storms.  WRNJ Radio
  • Senate President Nick Scutari has proposed legislation that will require all government bodies to post legal notices on their official websites—replacing the current system of daily print and digital news publications. The law will mandate a clearly marked link on each home page, the creation and maintenance of a state legal notices page, and publication of nonpublic notices in eligible online outlets.  Daily Record

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mental health experts said that in 2022 New Jersey's suicide rate for men aged 55 to 59 nearly doubled to 13.1 per 100,000 amid a 'friendship recession' where social ties faded. They warned that this loss of connection can lead to deep isolation — a risk that local mental health programs and free trainings aim to ease — and urged families to watch for signs of distress.  Daily Record

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today marks the 30th anniversary of the Devils' 1995 Stanley Cup win—where they swept the Detroit Red Wings—and the victory began a run that later included Cups in 2000 and 2003.  Daily Record
