- ➤ Royal Sovereign International Inc. pleaded guilty on Tuesday to a federal charge of failing to report a dangerous defect in its portable air conditioners that sparked over 40 fires and resulted in one death; the company agreed to pay $395,786.48 in restitution and a $16,025,000 penalty (all but $100,000 is suspended) and has since ended its consumer product operations. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Scientists explained that New Jersey earthquakes happen when tectonic plates slip along fault lines — releasing energy as seismic waves that can affect large areas. They noted that the Ramapo Fault in North Jersey is where many quakes occur — and that a magnitude 2.7 quake on Aug. 5 caused minimal damage. Daily Record
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Assemblywoman Aura Dunn said today that after emergency repairs on Route 80 sinkholes were completed, the state transportation department will begin a yearlong paving project on Route 80 between Route 206 and Route 202 on Aug. 27 with nighttime lane closures planned. She added that $150 million in transportation aid has been released to support county infrastructure projects — a measure aimed at boosting road safety and extending the highway's life. WRNJ Radio

- ➤ Jon and Karri Ricklin from Bergen County began their quest 10 years ago and have visited 285 diners across Bergen, Passaic, Morris and Sussex counties—documenting each visit with a menu photo and careful recordkeeping. - ➤ In July, New Jersey had 17,584 active home listings—19.89% more than last year—with 4,404 properties experiencing price cuts, a 35.01% increase. The market slowed after a busy spring and early summer as median listing prices fell 2.1% to $577,500. Daily Record
