  • Claire’s filed its second bankruptcy and private equity firm Ames Watson purchased the company for $104 million with a $36 million seller note—this deal will keep 795 North American stores open while some locations may close during restructuring. It is not clear if the New Jersey stores will be part of the closures as the company works to preserve its brand value.  Daily Record

  • Morris County man Maloy Amador, 43, was charged with attempted murder of a federal officer, discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence, possession of firearms by a convicted felon and intent to distribute cocaine after he fired at law enforcement during a search warrant execution at his Parsippany-Troy Hills residence on August 13.  WRNJ Radio

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in NJ remained near $3.05 per gallon on Aug. 21 as oil prices stayed steady due to low costs and ample supply — travelers for Labor Day weekend starting Aug. 29 should plan early trips to beat heavy traffic, with Saturday, Aug. 30 being the worst time.  Daily Record

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jenna Shulman, operator of Get Me Into College in Florham Park, said the college application process can cost nearly $10,000 before tuition, with school fees ranging from $15,300 to $65,000. She has helped students for 10 years manage applications and scholarships as more applicants use the Common Application for up to 20 schools—trends driven by sports and social media.  News 12 New Jersey

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The New Jersey Treasury mailed ANCHOR tax relief letters to nearly 1 million residents, letting them know their benefits range from $450 to $1,750 based on income. Those needing to update their address, bank info, or choose a paper check must apply online by Sept. 15 and verify using ID.me—payments will be sent on a rolling basis within 90 days.  WRNJ Radio
