CULTURE NEWS

  • Longo Planetarium at County College of Morris is offering three new cosmic shows through Dec. 13 that let families explore the universe inside a dome that is 33 feet high (tickets cost $10 and visitors must reserve online since spots are limited). The lineup features programs for children and older viewers with set showtimes on select Fridays and Saturdays.  WRNJ Radio

  • Nationwide, public libraries and schools are reporting rising book challenges as Banned Books Week runs until Oct. 11—while in New Jersey Gov. Murphy signed the Freedom to Read Act on Dec. 9 to protect free access to literature—local libraries in Denville and New Milford are promoting intellectual freedom.  Daily Record

  • Senator Anthony M. Bucco is renewing his call for a bill to make denying access to guide dogs a criminal offense after a local couple was refused Uber rides; the proposed law would turn first violations into petty disorderly persons offenses punishable by jail time + fines. The measure aims to strengthen accountability and protect those who rely on service animals from discrimination.  WRNJ Radio
  • On October 8, Jack Ciattarelli and Mikie Sherrill held their final gubernatorial debate at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy in New Brunswick. Ciattarelli called for change by ending New Jersey’s carbon tax policy and reworking transit routes while Sherrill promised to fight high costs by freezing rate hikes and lowering drug and rent prices — both aiming to ease burdens on local families.  Daily Record
  • NJDEP and NJDOT warned local drivers to slow down on roads this fall as deer mating season increases the risk of deer crossing unexpectedly. Officials said most collisions occur in early morning and around sunset—drivers are told to watch for deer and obey signs.  WRNJ Radio
  • Kroll Bond Rating Agency upgraded its outlook on New Jersey’s General Obligation Bonds to Positive—citing efforts to fully fund pensions and maintain a conservative budget. The agency said a full rating upgrade may follow soon as the state builds a steady financial surplus.  WRNJ Radio
  • Morris County law enforcement officials will take part in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 25 to let residents dispose of unused medications safely from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—collected drugs will be securely destroyed to curb abuse.  WRNJ Radio
