COMMUNITY NEWS

  • NorthJersey.com has chosen Hero as the adoptable pet of the week for Oct 10—this American bulldog and mastiff mix from Peace4Paws was rescued as a stray in December 2024 and quickly became a shelter favorite for his good manners and love for snuggles. He enjoys car rides, hikes, and playing with kids and is ready to find a new loving home.  Daily Record

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Oct. 9, many witnesses in New Jersey and other Northeast states reported a bright fireball to the American Meteor Society, with sightings coming from places such as Plainsboro Township and Cherry Hill Township. Reports showed the fast-moving light was seen by people in several states—adding to a series of unusual sky observations.  Daily Record
  • NJDEP Fish and Wildlife advises residents to secure trash, clean grills, and remove pet food as black bears become more active this fall and seek food to build fat reserves—residents risk fines for feeding bears and creating nuisance encounters.  WRNJ Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Morris County Commissioners have named Loretta Gragnani of Parsippany-Troy Hills to a new four-year term and reappointed George J. Milonas of Wharton to the County College of Morris Board of Trustees; both terms begin November 1, as part of efforts to strengthen the college's leadership and support its workforce programs.  WRNJ Radio
  • The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development said that initial unemployment claims rose 11.6% to 8,836 for the week ending October 4 amid the federal government shutdown. Continued claims dropped 2.4% and the state received over 500 claims from federal workers since the shutdown began on October 1—these numbers do not include furloughed federal employees.  WRNJ Radio

SPORTS NEWS

  • High school football games in Morris and Sussex counties delivered score updates on October 10 with matchups such as Morristown at Elizabeth at 6 p.m. and today scheduled games have kickoffs from noon to 3 p.m. — viewers can watch the live broadcast on NFHS Network.  Daily Record
  • Defending champion Madison field hockey received the No. 1 seed at the coaches' meeting on Oct. 8—West Morris, Chatham, and Mountain Lakes also earned byes for the first round. The tournament will have its first-round games by Oct. 15, second round by Oct. 18, quarterfinals on Oct. 22 at the better seed’s venue, semifinals on Oct. 25 at Boonton, and the final on Oct. 28 at Boonton at 7 p.m.  Daily Record
