  • Morris County honors the U.S. Navy’s 250th anniversary this week by recognizing local veterans’ service—serving from the Revolutionary War to modern conflicts. County officials recalled sacrifices such as the loss of five sailors on the USS Juneau as part of celebrations leading up to the nation’s semiquincentennial in 2026.  WRNJ Radio

ECONOMY NEWS

  • ShopRite will host a walk-in hiring fair on October 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at select New Jersey stores—job seekers can apply for full-time, part-time and management roles with competitive benefits and flexible scheduling.  WRNJ Radio
  • Drivers in Morristown are feeling relief as New Jersey’s average gas price nears $3.01—a drop from previous weeks reported by AAA. GasBuddy data shows the national price fell to $3.02 and diesel prices declined too—a sign that prices may drop further soon.  Daily Record

  • A North Jersey police chief said the Legislature must pass a law to regulate e-bikes and e-scooters after a fatal crash killed a 13-year-old in Scotch Plains on Sept. 24—he stressed that uniform rules and improved safety education are needed to protect young riders.  Daily Record

HEALTH NEWS

  • Morristown Medical Center broke ground on a new proton therapy system at the Carol G. Simon Cancer Center to offer precise cancer treatment—making it one of only four such systems in the nation. Over $12.5 million in donor support helped fund the project, and the system will be operational in 2026.  WRNJ Radio
  • FirstEnergy Corp. has shared Halloween safety tips to help families and decorators set up lights and inflatables safely by keeping decorations at least 10 feet from power lines, checking cords for damage, and using UL-marked equipment—if items become entangled in power lines, residents should call 888-LIGHTSS for help. Homeowners are also advised to clear walkways and use reflective costumes while drivers slow down during trick-or-treat hours.  WRNJ Radio

SPORTS NEWS

  • At the NWJA Cross Country meet on Oct. 14 in Parsippany, Montville freshman Gabriella Pelov won the large-schools girls race and Chatham won its second straight boys title with Marcus Valenzuela finishing first — several newcomers set personal bests as rival teams like Randolph and Villa Walsh broke long-held wins. Many runners will return for the Morris County meet on Oct. 21 and the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex championships on Oct. 23.  Daily Record
