COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Off Shore Marine in Branchville is hosting the 12th annual Stuff the Boat toy drive to support Project Self-Sufficiency’s Season of Hope Toy Drive. Residents can drop off new, unwrapped toys at the 24-foot boat on Route 206, at the Branchville Fire House on Nov. 29 from noon to 5 p.m., or at a Community Drop Off event on Dec. 6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with donations accepted until Dec. 11—helping many families in need.  WRNJ Radio
  • NorthJersey.com features adoptable pets of the week including Conan—a nearly 2-year-old cat rescued from Route 280 who now enjoys gentle petting—and Dolly—an 11-month-old shepherd pup in need of an active family that offers consistent training. Their profiles from Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge Inc. show both pets have transformed and are ready for a new home.  Daily Record

CULTURE NEWS

  • PBS has premiered Ken Burns’ new series, The American Revolution, which shows how key sites in New Jersey—River Edge, Teaneck, Hackensack, Newark, New Brunswick, Princeton, and Morristown—played a role in Washington’s fight during the war. The series uses letters and archival accounts to explain the struggles of soldiers and local divided loyalties, and future episodes will cover battles such as Monmouth.  Daily Record
  • Thomas Nast, the Morristown artist, used his own face to draw the version of Santa Claus we know today. His original drawings are shown at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum—open on weekends in December.  Daily Record
  • The Hanover Wind Symphony and the Morris Music Men will perform a free holiday concert on Dec. 14 at 3 p.m. at Memorial Junior School in Whippany— the program will feature early American carols, traditional holiday favorites, and a group sing-along finale.  WRNJ Radio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • More than 100 professional arborists will volunteer at Lewis Morris County Park on Saturday, Dec. 6 to perform tree work valued at $150K as part of the annual NJAISA Workday, officials said. The event—supported by the New Jersey Tree Foundation and Rutgers University Forestry Club—will help maintain safe trails for the park's thousands of visitors.  WRNJ Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Morris County Board of County Commissioners congratulated Stephanie Gorman on earning a second term as president of the New Jersey Association of County and City Health Officials—she took her oath at the Atlantic City Convention Center during the NJACCHO meeting held with the New Jersey League of Municipalities Conference. County leaders said her leadership will help improve local public health as they prepare for future challenges.  WRNJ Radio
  • The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced that lanes on Route 23 will close in both directions starting at noon on Saturday, November 22 to allow crews to pave, restripe and adjust barriers while shifting northbound traffic onto a temporary bridge until noon on Sunday, November 23 + motorists will be directed to a posted detour during the closure.  WRNJ Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lawmakers are considering bipartisan legislation—A-920/S-354—that would let optometrists use lasers to treat glaucoma and remove styes to reduce referral delays and extra costs, and they expect it will improve vision care for patients.  Daily Record

  • Local North Jersey parks offer five easy hiking options to help digest Thanksgiving dinner — they include the 1.1-mile Pond Loop at Ramapo Valley County Reservation, varied trails at Flat Rock Brook Nature Center, the 6.1-mile Lake Loop at Wawayanda State Park, a 2-mile paved Boulevard Trolley Line Path, and short hikes at Hacklebarney State Park.  Daily Record

  • Two Morris County soccer teams will play for state titles at Franklin High School this weekend. The Madison boys will compete at 10 a.m. Saturday against Robbinsville while the Chatham girls will face Shawnee at 12:30 p.m. Sunday in rematch games.  Daily Record
  • Morris/Sussex coaches announced postseason volleyball honors for five NJAC divisions by naming first and second teams with honorable mentions for top players from schools such as Villa Walsh, Morris Catholic and Morristown Beard.
