EDUCATION NEWS

  • The New Jersey Department of Education awarded nearly $3.75M in early literacy grants to northern New Jersey school districts to boost reading skills for K-3 students using two programs—FOCUS at $2.3M and BRIDGE at $1.4M—and the grants will run through May 31. This funding helps schools improve screening tools and provide teacher training in several counties.  WRNJ Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin joined 20 states in a federal lawsuit to stop the end of FEMA’s Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities program — which funds projects to protect homes and critical sites from natural disasters. The suit claims that ending the program violates federal law and will delay essential resilience work in affected areas.  WRNJ Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • On July 16, the state Supreme Court ruled that hospitals must offer charity care to patients who cannot pay, saying free treatment is not an unconstitutional taking of private property—hospitals can still try to change the rules through legal channels. The ruling means patients in Morristown and the state will not be billed for care if they qualify.  Daily Record

  • New Jersey Craft Beer Week is underway from July 13 to 20 to boost local craft brewers—over 150 independent breweries are hosting taproom events, special releases and closeout parties on July 19 and 20 to showcase their new beers, with local spots like Morristown’s Glenbrook Brewing among those participating.
